Dave Shulmanabout dave

Dave Shulman graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in June 2005. There he studied saxophone with Martin Speake, Stan Sulzman, Steve Buckley, Tim Garland and Iain Ballamy, and composition with Mark Bassey and Pete Churchill.

He also studied klezmer with Merlin Shepherd, Ilana Cravitz, Deborah Strauss, Jeff Washchaur and Frank London, attended master classes with New York based bands The Klezmatics and Veretsky Pass and in addition has studied Balkan music with Dave Bitelli. He has also on numerous occasions travelled to Eastern Europe collecting field recordings in addition to playing with and learning from Gypsy musicians including members of 'Taraf de Haidouks' and 'Taraf de Clejani'.

Since leaving music college he has steadily built up his reputation as a highly adaptable and skilled musician, playing tenor, alto and soprano saxophones as well as clarinet and bass clarinet all to an exeptionally high level and in a diverse range of musical styles.

On the jazz curcuit he has worked with an array of well known musicians including Alan Barnes, Steve Warterman, Mark Nightingale, Andy Panayi, Mike Garrick, Trevor Tomkin and John Dankworth. He has also had extensive experience playing with big bands. A regular in Mike Garricks Jazz Brittania band, who he recently recorded with on their forth-coming album, he has worked with bands lead by Dave Foster, Bobby Lamb and the Renegade big band. During his time as lead tenor saxophonist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra he played with Guy Barker, Tina May and Nikki Iles and has recorded with Sir John Dankworth and Cleo Lane. He also works regularly with many of Londons leading jazz musicians from his own generation including Ben Davis, Seb Rochford, Jonothan Braetoff, Robby Robson, Ivo Neame, George Hart, John Escreet, John Blease and Jim Hart.

On the world/klezmer music curcuit he has worked with Hilda Bronstein, Sophie Soloman, Ilana Cravitz, Guy Schalom, The Soloman Sisters, Forty Thieves Orkestar and Ghetto Plotz, and has recorded with the Shekoyokh Klezmer band as well as Max Pashm (Never mind the Balkans), he has also played with London based samba group 'Rhythms of the city' and co-leads Chancery Blame and the Gadjo Club, Londons premiere Gypsy Rock and Roll band. He regularly provides klezmer and jewish music for weddings and Barmitzvahs.

He has lead numerous ensembles playing his own original music including the experimental fusion band Sonic Mutation as well as having collaborated in a number of musical collectives including The Magic Lantern, in addition to the Fluggerbulgars and Collage.
