Having first played Eastern European Jewish music with my parents Klezmer band from a young age, it was towards the end of my college days that I began taking other kinds of Eastern European Folk and Gypsy Music more seriously.
Having been influenced by my teacher Dave Bitelli and various other musicians I began working with such as Jiri Slavik, Fred Thomas and Francesc Marco, when approaching different musical genres and sub-genres I tend to perceive each one as having its own set of stylistic parameters and its unique musical language. The challenge I find, is being able to express oneself within those parameters although sometimes, depending on the context, it can be fun to make informed decisions to occasionally move outside of them. Having recently joined the Kamao quintet which blends Romani Manouche tunes with the slightly more Westernized Django Rhinehardt repertoire, I find playing this music is an excellent bridge between World Music and Swing Jazz. |
