Swing and early jazz is a relatively recent venture for me and since recording on Hilda Bronstein's album which included elements of 'Yiddish Swing' I have taken the time to transcribe a considerable amount of early jazz greats such as Lester Young, Johnny Dodds and Lewis Armstrong. I found that the melodic and rhythmic inventiveness of these players has had a positive impact on my musicianship in general. The task of playing expressively whilst staying within certain stylistic parameters and also being responsible for contributing to the rhythmic energy and swing of the music is a challenge well worth-while. I also find it hugely beneficial for informing my playing of more contemporary forms of jazz and improvised music.
